Abstract provided by Publisher
Background. Cryorehabilitation (cryokinesitherapy) is of particular use in neurological patients with chronic diseases affecting their motor system. The objective of the paper was to identify therapeutic benefits and functional effects of cryorehabilitation in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) and children as well as teenagers with infantile cerebral palsy.
Material and methods. Hundred and fifty five people with MS and 26 people (children and teenagers) with infantile cerebral palsy were subjected to cryorehabilitation. Cryorehabilitation in MS consisted of 20 procedures of systemic cryotherapy followed by individual and group motor rehabilitation. The benefits and functional effects of complex physiotherapy in patients with MS were evaluated on the basis of spasticity assessment and evaluation of body stabilization in standing position. Cryorehabilitation in infantile cerebral palsy consisted of 10 procedures of systemic cryotherapy combined with individual program of revalidation. All therapists working with children and teenagers together with caretakers and parents made systematic observations of children in view of potential changes in their behavior.
Results and Conclusions. Functional improvement was achieved during cryorehabilitation of patients with MS. Systemic cryotherapy in children with infantile cerebral palsy had a beneficial effect on their mood and resulted in increased spontaneous motor activity and reduction of spasticity. Cryorehabilitation has significant position in rehabilitation of people with central nervous system damages.
